Gaijin!
It’s not that I forget to post here, I just feel like it should, for whatever reason, be really good when I do so. And I pretty much never do anything really good, or am moved by anything, so this field lay fallow.
Kind of like the fields being destroyed in Pom Poko.
Good segue to this, me thinks:
Dude is totally living out every dream I’ve ever had.
A female humpback was spotted in December 2005 east of the Farallon Islands, just off the coast of San Francisco. She was entangled in a web of crab-trap lines, hundreds of yards of nylon rope that had become wrapped around her mouth, torso and tail, the weight of the traps causing her to struggle to stay afloat. A rescue team arrived within a few hours and decided that the only way to save her...
Watching The Wheel
gordonshumway:
“People like me are aware of their so-called genius at ten, eight, nine…I always wondered, “Why has nobody discovered me?” In school, didn’t they see that I’m cleverer than anybody in this school? That the teachers are stupid too? That all they had was information I didn’t need? […] A couple of teachers would notice me, encourage me to be something or other, to draw or...
By the way
The Year of our Lord, 2009 AD, is half over.
And thus begins the rapid, blurred, muted vortex of adulthood.
Woah
Wow, I haven’t been here in a while. It’s amazing the tiny barriers that keep me from any sort of productivity. The fact that I have to click on the name of this blog in my Tumblr dashboard, before I even get to the tall task of putting myriad thoughts into actual words, is often enough to keep me from writing.
Also, watching full ALF episodes on Hulu at work. That is a bit of a...

I Knew I Hated Him
I found out Greg Maddux is a Republican today.
So let’s see:
- Atlanta Braves ace
- Tortured the Mets
- Accused cheater (a baseball friend told me he kept Vaseline under his tongue, so that every time he went to his mouth, which happened after every pitch, he was doctoring the ball to get that voodoo spin)
- GOP member
Yeah, that’s a pretty damn complete list. What a loathesome...
On Michael, a Prelude
On the Michael Jackson news, I’ve been watching nonstop coverage of his death, and two things stick out.
One, the outpouring of plaudits for MJ from other musicians, calling him an inspiration and great and all those true things. Beautiful sentiment, all of it, and totally true — the man has all four faces on the Mount Rushmore of pop (quite literally and figuratively). His talent is what...
The Inherent Problem
soupsoup:
“So, what we have is one perfectly good party for hedge fund managers, credit card companies, banks, defense contractors, big agriculture and the pharmaceutical lobby; that’s the Democrats. And they sit across the aisle from a small group of religious lunatics, flat-earth-ers and Civil War re-enactors who mostly communicate by AM radio and call themselves the Republicans. And who...
Now This Is News
This is so much more insightful and true than anything CNNTwitter has said in the last, let’s say, six years.
“We hope to inspire all of America to band together to make our nation a little bit less of an embarrassing shithole.”
Obama Drastically Scales Back Goals For America After Visiting Denny’s

“Sadly, the effort to redefine marriage against the wishes of a majority of the people is, with help from activist judges, succeeding… In order to defend the institution of marriage, uphold the rights of individual states, and maintain the will of the people, I believe we are compelled to amend our country’s constitution.
“Marriage is an extremely important institution in this country and...
Good Lieutenant
I think a prayer I sent towards the sky in 2006 has been answered. And I’m still ecstatic about it:
For those who mourned the final break up of New Order in 2007 and still cling nostalgically to Joy Division’s final album Closer, a new source of solace can now be turned to. A collaboration among the members of the two bands, along with Blur’s Alex James, has spawned a project...
"Compromise" = Bowing Down →
Obama’s trip comes as a possible compromise emerged in the Senate to one of the most vexing obstacles in the health care reform debate. Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., offered a plan to create health care cooperatives owned by groups of residents and small businesses. They would operate as nonprofits and without the government involvement that troubles Republicans and others about other public...
American Girls and Hyrule Boys
meaghano:
This weekend my best friend growing up, Sarah, visited New York, with her husband and his best friend. As is usually the case, their visit served as a reminder of all the things I have yet to do in the city— go to a Yankee’s game, ride to the top of the Empire State Building, and MOTHERFUCKIN GO TO THE MOTHERFUCKIN AMERICAN GIRL STORE.
Now I am someone who likes to believe in that...
Sotomayor's Virtual Cast →
I’m all for Obama’s choice of Sonia Sotamayor for the Supreme Court, but I’m trying to figure out the benefit of having a virtual cast for her.
Obama’s team used the internet in new, innovative ways, and it made a big difference, financially and organizationally. They got it more than anyone else has in politics thus far, at least on a national scale (Howard Dean’s...
Beginning of a Betrayal? →
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee will release a much anticipated draft of health care reform this afternoon, but the most contentious issues, like the public insurance option and employer mandate, will be left out of the bill for now, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) said this morning.
“There are some gaps. But there are no gaps in our determination, my determination...
"30 Rock" = "The Muppet Show" →

whoa.

No wonder why I like 30 Rock so much.
The Muppet Show DVD set is still something I aspire to, when I have the money to spend on things like The Muppet Show DVD set.
Public Option First →
Real health care reform—aka, a public option—is the lowest bar for progressives to clear with the current Congress. It has the most lobbying behind it, bringing in not only health care reform groups, but also unions and mutli-issue groups like MoveOn. It only requires 50 votes in the senate, whereas Republicans will force 60-votes on virtually everything else. It is a very popular,...
BlackBookMag.com on WhyMyExSucks →
Second site to mention book deal today. Calling all publishers: I’m open for offers.
I like money, and seasonal passes to aquariums up and down the east coast. And video games.
Fuck You Lauren Conrad
WhyMyExSucks is one spot behind fuckyeahlaurenconrad in tumblarity. Please. Someone reblog or follow. This cannot stand.
Call Me Cliché
I know it’s very Things White People Like of me, but The Wire is a fucking great show.
Which begs the question, at what point is something so great that it becomes so “cool” and chic that it’s uncool to like it? I feel like this is a constant battle I’m left fighting.
Some popular things are popular for a reason. There’s a reason everyone loves the Beatles and...
Buzzfeed on WhyMyExSucks →
So, I’m officially an internet meme. Or, my anonymous site, WhyMyExSucks.com is, anyway.
I’ve seen big traffic spikes before; I can only hope all my new tumblfriends can help sustain this one. Because that would definitely not suck.
Another Week on the Streets
About to head to work. And by that I mean, about to begin an insanely long commute that, if compensated with an hourly wage, would easily pay my utility bills.
I keep forgetting to download new music, a mistake a younger, more vibrant me would have never made. And so it’s the same, increasingly-tired soundtrack on my iPod that will drown out the subway.
It’s two hours without...
Yo Ho Ho
I was out to dinner last night, and a friend at the table made the executive decision to order a bucket of beers (needless to say, this was a classy establishment). When the waiter came, my friend, perhaps seeking to seem fluent in the lingo of the locals, simply requested “a bucket.”
His order vague, the waiter responded, “a bucket of what?” Without thought, I injected...
11-year-old Graduates College →
Up next for the tireless boy wonder: In the next six months to a year, he plans to devote himself to martial arts, write a book for kids on how to succeed in school, and take up scuba diving.
Not on the agenda: playing video games.
“I feel it’s a waste of time playing video games because it’s not helping humanity in any way,” says Moshe, who wants to use his knowledge to...

Hello Cruel World
I hate introductory posts. They seem so self-indulgent. Then again, the URL of this site is my name, so I think I’m way past that threshold.
The about section says pretty much all there is to say. To eat, clothe and house myself, I am an assistant editor at a website. To not go fucking crazy, I work on my own projects. Like that screenplay that I’m finishing up, and the...
