Ensign Cops Some DOMA
“Sadly, the effort to redefine marriage against the wishes of a majority of the people is, with help from activist judges, succeeding… In order to defend the institution of marriage, uphold the rights of individual states, and maintain the will of the people, I believe we are compelled to amend our country’s constitution.
“Marriage is an extremely important institution in this country and protecting it is, in my mind, worth the extraordinary step of amending our constitution.”
John Ensign (R-Hypocricy). On the front lines of defending marriage. In fact, he loves marriage so much, he tries to inject himself (literally) into as many as he can!
The Nevada Republican admitted in Las Vegas Tuesday that he had “violated the vows” of marriage by having an affair with a staffer. He did not identify the woman except to say that she and her husband were both “close friends” who worked for him, and that “the closeness” of their relationship had “put me in situations which led to my inappropriate behavior.”
But current and former aides to the Nevada Republican say the woman was 46-year-old Cynthia Hampton, a campaign staffer whose husband was a top aide in Ensign’s Senate office.
But really, he’s such a straight marriage superhero, he actually IMPROVES marriages. Like a dick vigilante relationship counselor.
Ensign’s wife, Darlene, said that the couple’s “marriage has become stronger” and added: “I love my husband.”
Hey, if he’s making things better, all the more reason why he remains “committed to [his] service in the United States Senate.” I mean, that makes it totally different than Clinton. He gave that one a lot of hard thought, you know:
“I came to that conclusion recently, and frankly it’s because of what he put his whole Cabinet through and what he has put the country through,” Ensign said Thursday, becoming the first member of the Nevada delegation to call for Clinton to quit. “He has no credibility left.”
But hey, don’t forget one important detail. It’s all good, so long as he wasn’t one of teh gays:
When former Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in an airport men’s room in the summer of 2007, Ensign was among Craig’s toughest critics, saying Craig should step down because he had been charged with a crime.
“I wouldn’t put myself, hopefully, in that kind of position, but if I was in a position like that, that’s what I would do,” Ensign told The Associated Press at the time.
One good piece of news for Ensign? His chances for the Republican nomination just got better — he’s on his way to catching up to thrice divorced former Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is most lauded in GOP circles for having an affair while his wife died of cancer.
